HOW WE GET THE BETTER TRANSLATION

We at NYAS Research provide language solutions such as translation of the questionnaire, transcription of the collected data, and interpreter services.

Bad communication can cause confusion, errors and can potentially lead to inaccurate data collection. At NYAS Research & Development, we take at least one week for the initial translation and at least one more week for editing and reviewing the translations to get the best of the translation. For every project, we process the below methods –

OUR TRANSLATION PROCESS

FORWARD TRANSLATION

In this step, we translate from the original questionnaire language to the local language. This step takes few days to a few weeks, depending on the complexity and size of the questionnaire.

BACK TRANSLATION

In this step, we send only the local language translation (that we did in step 1) to a different translator, translating it back to the original questionnaire language.

RECONCILIATION

In this step, our team compares the original questionnaire to the back-translated questionnaire. Then, in reconciliation phase, we highlight any discrepancies and categorize them as either minor or significant error, and correct in the forward translated file.

WE DO EXTRA CARE FOR TELEPHONIC SURVEYS

For Telephonic Surveys such as computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI), every research survey needs conversational translation rather than a typical translation. For every research project, we keep a few extra things in mind.

1. Cross-Checking Of the Translation

In this step, we Cross-check the translation with the enumerator or person who lives in the sample area of the project, so we get a better translation for each question.

2. Translation Correction By Enumerator

In this step, we provide enumerators with printed copies of the questionnaire to suggest a better translation for each question.

3. Translation Correction During Training

While editing and correcting in previous steps, we get a good translation, but we make it right away if we consider making any further improvements during training.
